Acid Free
Term used to describe board/paper/adhesive that has been treated to give ph value of 7+ n.b.Misleading as over time pollutants may lead to formation of acid
Aperture/Windowmount
Opening at centre of piece of mount board that has been cut to image size
Bevel
Slanted cut of window mount aperture or the angle border of mirror glass
Blocking/Squaring
Manner in which hand sewn needlework is pulled into shape often by dampening the needlework (making fibre more pliant) then allowing to dry naturally
Cockling
Paper is hydroscopic, so naturally absorbs water from the atmosphere. It expands as it dampens and contracts on drying, which may result in rippling/cockling
Dry mounting
Method of flattening artwork at Budget, Minimum and Commended level of framing Achieved with use of a heated vacuum press, self adhesive board , spray on adhesive or pressure/heat activated tissue in press or roller
Foxing
Brown spots caused by fungus growth and acid stains in framing materials or paper on which art work is painted or drawn Refer to Paper conservators for removal
Gicle’e Prints
Inkjet print where image stored as digital file is outputted onto paper or canvas with a high resolution wide format printer
Image size
Measurements of artwork to be visible within frame/mount including borders
Limited Edition Prints
Print run limited to the number stated on the print ( usually bottom edge) historically 850 usual maximum
Open Edition Prints
No limit to quantity of prints which may also be used on greeting cards, t shirts etc
Undermount/Barrier layer/Back mount or rear mount
Surface onto which art work is attached
